The Amarillo City Council allocated $250,000 from its working budget Tuesday to bolster security at Transformation Park, a facility set to open in April. Transformation Park aims to provide far more than temporary shelter. The facility is designed to address the root causes of homelessness and help individuals rebuild their lives through a holistic approach that includes healthcare, job training, and affordable housing initiatives.
A Visionary Facility with a Bold Mission
Transformation Park represents a groundbreaking public-private partnership between the city of Amarillo, local churches, and businesses. The goal is to provide a comprehensive array of services that address not only the immediate need for shelter but also the systemic issues that contribute to chronic homelessness.
“Our mission is to tackle homelessness holistically,” said Mark Zimmerman, executive director of Transformation Park. “It’s not just about providing shelter; it’s about addressing interconnected issues like healthcare, job training, and affordable housing. By doing this, we’re helping people find long-term stability and regain their dignity.”
The park’s first phase includes a night shelter and 45 cabins capable of housing up to 70 individuals at a time. Each cabin is designed to offer privacy, safety, and a sense of belonging—elements that are critical for fostering a foundation for personal growth and recovery. Future expansions will add day-use facilities, low-income housing, and job-training centers to further the park’s mission.
Transformation Park’s design has been praised for integrating supportive services into one centralized location, making it easier for residents to access the resources they need. The facility also aims to build relationships with local employers to create job opportunities, as well as partnerships with healthcare providers to ensure that residents receive physical and mental health care.
Investing in Safety: $250,000 Security Allocation
As part of its efforts to ensure the facility’s success, the Amarillo City Council voted unanimously to allocate $250,000 to fund critical security enhancements. The funds will go toward:
State-of-the-art security cameras to monitor activity throughout the facility and surrounding areas.
A walk-through metal detector and bag scanner to prevent the entry of weapons, drugs, or other prohibited items.
An internally trained security team composed of three to four full-time personnel, many of whom will be former residents of Transformation Park.
Zimmerman emphasized that the security measures are not merely a precaution but a foundational element for the facility’s operations. “Security is critical to ensuring a safe environment within and around the facility,” he said. “We cannot open Transformation Park without these systems in place.”
The decision to train and employ former residents as security personnel is a key part of Transformation Park’s mission to empower individuals. “This approach not only provides meaningful job training but also helps create a sense of community and ownership among our residents,” Zimmerman added.
A Community Effort for Lasting Change
The council’s financial commitment to Transformation Park is part of a broader effort to foster public safety and tackle homelessness in a proactive and sustainable way. Mayor Cole Stanley called the funding a critical investment in the city’s future.
“This is an investment in our community’s future,” Stanley said. “Proactively addressing homelessness is as important as resolving issues once they occur. These dollars are a commitment to public safety and collaboration. Together, we’re taking a step toward creating real, lasting change.”
Councilmember Tom Scherlen echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of equipping Transformation Park to succeed from the outset. “We want Transformation Park to open with everything it needs to make a real impact,” Scherlen said. “This funding is a one-time investment to help them start strong.”
Building Hope, One Life at a Time
Transformation Park’s upcoming opening on April 12 has already sparked hope and excitement throughout Amarillo. Beyond providing immediate relief to those experiencing homelessness, the facility’s holistic approach seeks to create sustainable pathways for individuals to regain independence and stability.
Plans for future development include additional cabins to expand capacity, specialized centers for job training and education, and long-term affordable housing options to address Amarillo’s housing crisis. The facility’s integrated approach aims to tackle interconnected issues such as mental health, addiction, and employment, recognizing that homelessness is rarely caused by a single factor.
Zimmerman believes Transformation Park is more than just a facility—it’s a movement to restore hope and opportunity. “This is a community coming together to make a real difference,” he said. “It’s not just about providing shelter; it’s about restoring lives and helping people find a way forward. Together, we can address homelessness and create a brighter future for Amarillo.”
A Model for the Future
Transformation Park is being hailed as a potential model for cities nationwide grappling with homelessness. By integrating housing, healthcare, employment, and safety under one roof, the facility represents a bold new direction in how communities can tackle systemic challenges.
