107th Amarillo Police Academy Welcomes New Class of Recruits

Seventeen recruits have begun training in the 107th Amarillo Police Academy under the Amarillo Police Department, beginning an eight-month program designed to prepare them for service as police officers. The curriculum will challenge participants mentally, physically, and emotionally while providing instruction and mentorship from experienced officers and staff, with graduation culminating in the awarding of badges and assignments to the department.

Canyon Commission Recognizes Major Donation for Baseball Complex Repairs

The Canyon City Commission recognized the Panhandle Youth Sports Foundation for a $75,000 donation supporting replacement of damaged light poles at the Kent Johnson Baseball Complex. The project follows severe damage from the June 5, 2025 hailstorm that forced the removal of five unsafe poles, and the contribution helps offset the $143,000 replacement cost while the city also approved a plaque honoring the foundation’s support.

Sod Poodles Fundraising Efforts Boost Wildfire Relief

The Amarillo Sod Poodles announced that its Toy Story jersey auction and related fundraising activities generated thousands of dollars for wildfire relief across the region. Proceeds from game-worn jersey auctions, in-park collections, and raffles benefited the Amarillo Area Foundation’s Panhandle Disaster Relief Fund, with additional matching support from The People’s Federal Credit Union helping bring total contributions to more than $14,000 for families affected by May wildfires in Amarillo and Canyon.

Arrests Made in South Tyler Street Homicide Case

Amarillo Police Homicide investigators with the Amarillo Police Department have arrested 43-year-old Meghan Dawn Kern and 18-year-old Jaylyn Andrew Johnson in connection with the May 25 shooting death of Jeremy Ray. Both suspects have been charged with murder through the Randall County District Attorney’s Office, with Johnson booked into Randall County Jail and Kern already in custody on unrelated charges as the investigation continues.

Potter County Commissioners to Meet on Wide-Ranging Agenda

The Potter County Commissioners Court will convene Monday morning in Amarillo at 350 Southeast 6th Avenue to consider staffing, technology upgrades, public safety measures, and infrastructure agreements. Agenda items include a temporary JP #1 employee, an election server replacement, a Veterans Service Officer appointment, discussion of a fireworks ban, and a three-year internet upgrade agreement with Pathwayz Communications, along with budget and operational updates.
