AISD fireworks display sparks debate as wildfires burn near Amarillo

City of Amarillo officials addressed questions Tuesday regarding fireworks displays held during Amarillo ISD graduation ceremonies, following criticism from some residents after recent wildfires in the area.

During a press conference hosted by the Amarillo Area Office of Emergency Management, city officials said fireworks displays are generally permitted when organizers meet all required city, county, and state regulations. Officials noted that Amarillo ISD’s graduation fireworks displays met those requirements.

The concerns stem from a fireworks show held Monday night during Tascosa High School’s graduation ceremony at Dick Bivins Stadium. The display drew criticism from members of the surrounding community because of ongoing fire concerns after a large wildfire ignited near Amarillo over the weekend.

A fire that began Sunday at a landfill near the city spread Monday into Potter County and surrounding communities. Officials said heavy sustained winds and dry vegetation helped fuel the fire’s growth, raising public concern about any activities that could potentially create additional fire risks.

In response to questions surrounding the graduation fireworks, Amarillo ISD said the district followed all safety and permitting requirements before the event took place.

“In planning a grand finale for our Class of 2026 graduates, the District met necessary permitting requirements by the city, county and state. Conditions at the stadium last night were well-within safety regulations, and the launch was authorized in cooperation with the City of Amarillo Fire Marshal’s Office. Our goal is solely to celebrate our grads and families in a safe manner,” Amarillo ISD said in a statement.

City officials echoed that explanation during Tuesday’s emergency management press conference, emphasizing that the district complied with the necessary approval process.

Despite the criticism, Amarillo ISD officials said the district plans to continue fireworks displays at graduation ceremonies scheduled for the remainder of the week.

The situation highlights the balance local officials and organizations must consider during periods of heightened fire danger. While fireworks displays can serve as celebratory traditions for graduates and families, recent wildfire activity across the region has left many residents especially sensitive to fire safety concerns.
