Suspect killed after ramming truck into Michigan synagogue and school: No students or staff injured

Authorities say a suspected attacker was killed Thursday after ramming a truck into a synagogue and religious school in suburban Detroit, triggering a tense law enforcement response and lockdown. No students or staff were injured, officials said.

The incident occurred at Temple Israel (West Bloomfield) and its adjoining Tyner Religious School in West Bloomfield, Michigan, where security officers were already on duty amid heightened precautions during the ongoing war in Iran.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the suspect drove a vehicle directly into the building before gunfire erupted.

“Security did engage the suspect with gunfire” after the vehicle “breached the building and drove down the hall,” Bouchard said during a televised news briefing. Surveillance video showed the vehicle “traveling with purpose down the hall” before the shooting began, he added.

Authorities believe the attacker is dead. “We believe that individual is dead,” Bouchard said.

Despite the dramatic scene, officials confirmed that everyone inside the school was safe.

“No kids or staff was injured, whatsoever,” Bouchard said.

Security Guard Injured, Vehicle Fire Complicates Investigation

A security guard was struck by the vehicle during the attack and knocked unconscious. Bouchard said the guard was treated at a hospital and is expected to recover.

After the vehicle crashed inside the building, it caught fire, sending heavy smoke throughout the facility and complicating the investigation.

Bomb squad officers were dispatched to determine whether explosives were inside the vehicle.

Police believe the attacker acted alone, though the early investigation has been slowed by the fire damage.

Authorities have not yet identified the suspect and say they are still determining how he died.

“Sometimes when somebody’s trapped, they kill themselves,” Bouchard said.

The fire also caused significant smoke inside the building.

“We had to send people in with gas masks to clear that area,” Bouchard said.

Large Police Response

The incident prompted a massive law enforcement presence around the synagogue complex.

Hundreds of police vehicles lined the streets near the temple. Officers were seen escorting children off buses and guiding them into the school while others carried AR-15-style rifles as part of the security response.

Bouchard said local authorities’ experience with recent mass shootings helped shape their response.

“Well, tragically, we’ve responded to four mass shootings in the last five years, so with that comes learning and experience and preparatory actions,” he said.

Community Shocked

Residents nearby described the scene as chaotic and frightening.

Heather Crews, who was driving past the area on her way to the gym, said she initially didn’t know what was happening.

“I didn’t know what was going on, and I got a bunch of texts,” she told SAN. “I turned around, and there were cars everywhere, and you can’t move. Parents just stopping their cars to make sure their kids are okay. I’ve never seen anything like this in my life.“

Officials Respond

Gretchen Whitmer, governor of Michigan, said her office was working with state police to gather more information.

“This is heartbreaking. Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” she wrote on social media. “Antisemitism and violence have no place in Michigan. I am hoping for everyone’s safety.”

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel also expressed support for the synagogue community.

“Antisemitism has no place in Michigan and cannot be tolerated,” she said in a statement.

Bouchard declined to speculate on whether the attack was ideologically motivated, though he noted authorities had been discussing security at “Jewish facilities” in recent weeks.

By mid-afternoon, the Jewish Federation of Detroit lifted a regional lockdown affecting synagogues and Jewish organizations.

In a statement, the federation said security would remain heightened across the community and urged the public to avoid spreading unconfirmed information online.

“There will continue to be a strong police and security presence throughout the community. We ask community members to refrain from speculation or sharing unconfirmed information — especially on social media.”

Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing.
