McDonald’s is reviving one of its most beloved and nostalgic menu items this summer, announcing the nationwide return of its original Fried Apple Pie as part of celebrations tied to America’s upcoming 250th birthday.
The classic dessert will return to participating McDonald’s restaurants across the United States beginning June 23. The limited-time offering marks the first widespread return of the fried version in more than 30 years, giving longtime customers a chance to enjoy a menu favorite that has become a symbol of the chain’s early years.
The returning Fried Apple Pie features a filling made with 100% American-grown apples encased in the crispy, flaky fried crust that helped make the dessert a customer favorite after its introduction in the 1960s. The pie’s distinctive texture and flavor have remained a source of nostalgia for many fans since it disappeared from most U.S. locations.
The origins of the Fried Apple Pie trace back to East Tennessee franchise owner Litton Cochran, who developed a fried apple hand pie that gained popularity in his local market. The concept eventually evolved into a nationwide menu item and became one of McDonald’s signature desserts.
McDonald’s first rolled out the Fried Apple Pie nationally in 1968, the same year the company introduced the Big Mac. The dessert remained a staple on menus until 1992, when the company transitioned to a baked version in most U.S. markets amid growing consumer concerns about dietary fat and cholesterol.
Although the fried pie largely disappeared from American restaurants, it continued to be sold in select locations, including Hawaii, and remains available in several international markets such as the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Greece, and China.
To celebrate the pie’s return and America’s semiquincentennial festivities, McDonald’s plans to unveil a massive 35-foot Fried Apple Pie installation along historic Route 66 in Joliet, Illinois. The attraction, billed as the company’s largest Fried Apple Pie display, will be located at 920 N. Broadway Street and remain on display from June 23 through July 4.
The launch event is expected to feature live entertainment, complimentary Arch Cards, and Coca-Cola beverages as part of the promotional festivities.
According to company officials, the campaign is designed to honor American traditions while reconnecting customers with a menu item that evokes decades of memories. The move also aligns with a broader trend among fast-food chains introducing patriotic-themed products and promotions ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
McDonald’s has not announced an official end date for the Fried Apple Pie’s return, stating only that the dessert will be available for a limited time during the summer promotion period.
The announcement has already generated significant buzz online, with social media users sharing memories of the original fried dessert and expressing excitement about its comeback. For many fans, the return of the Fried Apple Pie represents more than just a menu item—it is a nostalgic reminder of a classic era in McDonald’s history.
