As the Texas Panhandle heads into a busy summer week, local organizations and public safety officials are encouraging residents to stay safe while taking advantage of community events and opportunities. From Independence Day reminders to family-friendly entertainment and support for first responders, here are some of the latest developments from around Amarillo.

APD Reminds Residents Fireworks Remain Illegal in City Limits

With Independence Day celebrations approaching, the Amarillo Police Department is reminding residents that fireworks are prohibited within Amarillo city limits.

Officials said fireworks can cause serious injuries, spark fires, and create hazards for neighbors and emergency personnel. APD also cautioned against celebratory gunfire, noting that bullets fired into the air eventually return to the ground and can cause injuries, fatalities, or property damage.

Police are encouraging residents to celebrate responsibly and help keep the community safe during the holiday season.

Amarillo Parks & Recreation is inviting couples to enjoy an evening outdoors during its upcoming “Picnic in the Park” event.

The event is scheduled for June 26 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at John Ward Memorial Park. Tickets cost $20 per person and include picnic baskets, couples games, painting activities, and more.

Organizers said participants must be at least 18 years old and register by 11:59 p.m. on June 21 through the Amarillo Parks & Recreation website.

Loose Gas Tank Causes Scare Near Canyon Drive

Amarillo police and firefighters responded Friday morning to an incident near Canyon Drive and Southeast 24th Avenue after a loud noise was reported in the area.

According to officials at the scene, a medium-sized gas tank detached from its support at a residence while someone was working with its valves. The tank rolled onto a nearby roadway, prompting a response from emergency crews.

No injuries or significant damage were reported. The scene was being cleared by mid-morning, though drivers were advised to remain alert for emergency vehicles in the area.

100 Club Expands Support for First Responders

The 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle continues to provide assistance to first responders and their families, including support for the family of Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper Sergio Romero, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month.

Executive Director Suzanne Talley said the organization has also assisted 13 injured first responders and provided life-saving equipment to agencies across the region.

The group recently partnered with the Amarillo Area Foundation and Amarillo National Bank to distribute $10,000 grants to 15 volunteer fire departments impacted by this year’s wildfires, with plans to eventually assist up to 35 departments. The organization’s work is funded through community donations that remain in the Texas Panhandle.
