U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson has stepped into a local election contest, offering his endorsement in the upcoming Republican runoff for Potter County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1. Jackson publicly backed Amanda Mayfield through a post on Facebook.
Mayfield, a retired attorney, is competing against Bryan Tackett, a chaplain and insurance broker, for the Republican nomination. The race will determine who succeeds longtime incumbent Debbie Horn, who is retiring from the position.
The justice of the peace role plays a key function in the local court system, handling a range of community-level legal matters. These include truancy cases, landlord-tenant disputes, small claims lawsuits, and traffic-related issues across southcentral Potter County.
The outcome of the Republican runoff will set the stage for the general election contest later this year. The GOP nominee will face Democratic candidate David Martinez in November. Voters will ultimately decide who will assume the bench in January and oversee one of the county’s busiest lower courts.
