The Slaton Police Department has released new details regarding the fatal shooting that occurred Sunday night, confirming the identities of the victims and the suspect.
According to a press release obtained Tuesday, 27-year-old George Cantu has been identified as the shooter. Authorities say the incident was motivated by disputes related to marital and child visitation issues between Cantu and his common-law ex-wife, 24-year-old Jasmine Rivas.
Police report that Cantu entered a home in the 300 block of E. Floyd Street armed with a handgun. During the incident, he intentionally shot and wounded both Jasmine Rivas and 24-year-old Isaiah Chapa. Tragically, Cantu also fatally shot his cousins, 18-year-old Marisol Ramirez and 23-year-old Araceli Valdez, before taking his own life.
Isaiah Chapa and Jasmine Rivas were transported by EMS to University Medical Center. Authorities have not released updates on their current condition.
Slaton Police noted that alcohol was a factor in the incident.
The Lubbock Metro Crimes Unit has taken over the lead investigation. Police have described the case as ongoing and continue to gather information.
