Gunny’s Gala brings community together for Amarillo’s homeless veterans

There’s something truly powerful about a community that comes together to honor its heroes—and Amarillo is doing just that. On Friday, October 18 at 6 p.m., Homeless Heroes of Amarillo will host Gunny’s Gala at Arts in the Sunset, promising an unforgettable night filled with music, dinner, and stories of redemption and resilience.

Officials say tickets are selling quickly, and it’s no wonder why. This isn’t just another gala—it’s a heartfelt mission to end homelessness among local veterans while celebrating their courage, sacrifice, and strength.

The evening will feature a full lineup of experiences designed to inspire and uplift. Guests will enjoy a live band performance, dinner service, cocktail hour, VIP reception, live auction, and interactive art displays. It’s a night that perfectly blends entertainment with purpose, reminding us that giving back can be as meaningful as it is enjoyable.

At the heart of Gunny’s Gala is the incredible story of Staff Sergeant John P. Jones, USMC (Ret.), a wounded Marine veteran and national advocate who will serve as the evening’s featured speaker. Jones’s journey is one of extraordinary resilience. After losing both legs in Iraq in 2005, he refused to let tragedy define him. Instead, he transformed his pain into purpose—dedicating his life to helping others heal and rebuild.

Since his injury, Jones has worked tirelessly with national nonprofits supporting wounded veterans and their families. His advocacy has reached countless people across the country, inspiring both military and civilian communities alike. Many may recognize him from HBO’s Alive Day Memories or his upcoming appearance in the film Down the Arm of God. His story stands as a living reminder that courage doesn’t end on the battlefield—it continues in the fight to overcome, to serve, and to uplift others.

Homeless Heroes of Amarillo has long been a beacon of hope for local veterans who have fallen on hard times. Their mission is simple yet vital: to end homelessness for area veterans and help them reclaim stability, dignity, and a sense of belonging. Through housing initiatives, community partnerships, and advocacy, the organization has changed lives—and events like Gunny’s Gala make that work possible.

Those who attend will not only enjoy an evening of fine food and live music, but will also be part of something much larger: a movement to ensure that no veteran is left behind. Each ticket sold, each dollar donated, helps provide housing, resources, and support for heroes who once fought for our freedom and now deserve a fighting chance at a better life.

Whether you’re a longtime supporter of Homeless Heroes or new to their mission, Gunny’s Gala is the perfect opportunity to get involved, meet like-minded community members, and make a meaningful difference.

Tickets and tables are available now, but they’re going fast. To reserve your spot, call 806-340-3510 or visit the Homeless Heroes website.

Join Amarillo in celebrating service, strength, and the power of community. On October 18, let’s come together to honor our heroes and help end veteran homelessness—one story, one meal, and one act of kindness at a time.
