Potter County residents are being warned about a new scam involving fake text messages claiming recipients owe unpaid property taxes.
According to the Potter County Tax Office, numerous calls and inquiries have come in this week from Amarillo residents who reported receiving a text message urging them to pay alleged unpaid taxes through a link provided in the message.
Officials confirm the message is a scam and is not connected in any way to legitimate property tax accounts in Potter County.
“We want to encourage our taxpayers to be vigilant and to protect themselves against scams,” said Potter County Tax Assessor-Collector Thomas Warren. “The Potter County Tax Office will never contact you by text message to ask you to pay your taxes. Any correspondence originating from our office will be distributed solely through U.S. mail.”
The tax office is urging residents not to click any links in the message and to disregard the text entirely. The office stressed that it does not use text messaging for tax collection.
