Pedestrian killed in Southwest Amarillo, driver charged with intoxicated manslaughter

A tragic accident early Sunday morning has left one man dead and another behind bars, as Amarillo Police continue to investigate a fatal vehicle-pedestrian collision in the southwest part of the city.

According to the Amarillo Police Department, officers responded to a report of a crash around 6:40 a.m. in the 2100 block of South Coulter Street. Upon arrival, they found 34-year-old Brandon Waugh of Amarillo deceased at the scene after being struck by a white Buick Enclave.

Investigators say the vehicle, driven by 35-year-old Brett Hudson, was traveling southbound when it veered off the road and struck Waugh. The impact proved fatal, and Waugh was pronounced dead by first responders. After the collision, the vehicle continued moving and eventually came to rest in a gravel driveway in the 2000 block of South Coulter.

Officials reported that Hudson was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Potter County Detention Center. He now faces a charge of Intoxicated Manslaughter, a second-degree felony under Texas law.

Police stated that both speed and narcotic use are believed to have contributed to the crash. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether toxicology results have been confirmed, but Hudson remains in custody as the legal process unfolds.

Justice of the Peace Robert Taylor has ordered an autopsy on Waugh as part of the ongoing investigation.

The Amarillo Police Department’s Traffic Investigation Unit continues to examine the circumstances of the incident, including potential impairment, vehicle speed, and other environmental factors at the time of the crash.

This is a developing story, and further details will be provided as they become available.
