The popular Hoodoo Mural Festival, known for transforming walls into vibrant expressions of art and culture, is heading to a new venue this year. Festival organizers announced that the event will move from its traditional downtown Amarillo location to Arts in the Sunset, an indoor/outdoor arts campus operated by the Amarillo Art Institute.
The decision, according to festival founder Andrew Hall, is driven by a desire for more space, safety, and accessibility as the event continues to grow.
“More facilities, more parking, more security—everything that you want to feel safe and enjoy a vibrant art and music festival,” said Hall.
Now entering its sixth year, the Hoodoo Mural Festival has become a cultural staple in the Texas Panhandle, drawing in thousands of attendees and showcasing world-class muralists. Last year’s event attracted more than 3,000 people and celebrated the completion of 24 large-scale murals.
The new site—Arts in the Sunset, located in Amarillo’s Sunset Center—offers several key advantages over the festival’s previous downtown footprint. With a mix of indoor galleries and outdoor spaces, it allows for a more versatile and weather-resilient experience.
“Having it here allows us to maybe have to do less fencing because a large portion of it is in the building in enclosed areas,” explained Rachel Flores, Executive Director of the Amarillo Art Institute. “We’re also going to use some pieces of the building and the parking lot for murals and live performances.”
The move will also allow organizers to introduce more interactive art components that were difficult to pull off in the downtown setting.
“Sunset Arts Center allows us to have these interactive art experiences that we’ve been really wanting to add to Hoodoo over the past few years, but we didn’t really have the space,” Hall said.
Planning for the one-day festival is already underway, as large-scale outdoor events like this require ample time for setup and logistics. With improved facilities and flexible event space, organizers hope this year’s festival will be more immersive and accommodating for artists, vendors, and attendees alike.
The sixth annual Hoodoo Mural Festival is set to take place on Saturday, September 27, and promises a full day of live music, large-scale mural painting, food trucks, and community art activities. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale in June.
As the Hoodoo Mural Festival steps into a new chapter, both the organizers and the Amarillo art community are optimistic that this move will elevate the event’s profile while maintaining its creative soul.
