Trump: Musk needs White House approval for government overhaul

President Donald Trump has made it clear that Elon Musk, leader of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), cannot take action without direct approval from the White House. The statement comes as Musk spearheads efforts to shrink the federal government in Trump’s second term.

Musk’s role in the administration has drawn sharp criticism, particularly after he claimed responsibility for shutting down the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), calling it a “criminal organization.” Meanwhile, a lawsuit has been filed alleging that DOGE improperly accessed confidential Treasury Department data.

Trump: Musk Has Limits

“Elon [Musk] can’t do and won’t do anything without our approval,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday. “And we’ll give him the approval where appropriate. Where not appropriate, we won’t.”

The remarks came amid reports that DOGE employees had gained access to Treasury Department data, including payment systems linked to Social Security and Medicare. When asked whether Musk had control over those systems, Trump downplayed concerns.

“He’s got access only to letting people go that he thinks are no good, if we agree with him, and it’s only if we agree with him,” the president said. “He’s a very talented guy from the standpoint of management and costs.”

USAID Shutdown Sparks Controversy

The White House’s decision to shutter USAID, which has provided foreign aid since 1961, has sparked bipartisan debate. While Secretary of State Marco Rubio assured that some of its functions would continue under the State Department, Musk made his position clear.

“USAID is a criminal organization,” he posted on X on Sunday. “Time for it to die.”

The move has drawn fierce opposition from Democratic lawmakers, who have also expressed alarm over Musk’s growing role in government affairs. The lawsuit filed against the Treasury Department adds further scrutiny, with concerns over whether DOGE has been granted access to sensitive financial data.

Political and Legal Fallout

Musk’s deep involvement in Trump’s administration follows his significant financial backing of the president’s reelection campaign, reportedly contributing over $250 million. His influence in reshaping the federal government is unprecedented for a private citizen, raising legal and ethical questions.

As investigations into DOGE’s actions unfold, Trump’s insistence that Musk operates under White House authority may be a key factor in shaping the legal and political battles ahead.
