The Amarillo Police Department's Special Victims Unit (SVU) is stepping up its efforts to combat online child exploitation, having already made more than 100 arrests related to child sex crimes this year. As new digital platforms and technologies offer more opportunities for online predators to target vulnerable children, the department is adapting its strategies to stay ahead of the evolving digital landscape.
Lt. Chaz Williams, who leads the SVU division, emphasized the critical need for law enforcement to stay one step ahead in an increasingly digital world. "We’re constantly updating our knowledge on the latest technology, apps, and gaming systems that children use. We’re not just watching from the sidelines—we're using those same platforms to understand what’s happening online," Williams said.
The department’s shift in strategy comes as concerns about the dangers children face on digital platforms grow among both authorities and parents. Social media platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, as well as popular gaming consoles, have become hotbeds for inappropriate content and dangerous interactions, leaving children particularly vulnerable to exploitation.
Williams stressed that protecting children in the digital age requires a concerted effort from both law enforcement and parents. "Parents need to be proactive in monitoring their children's online activity. There are resources available, such as apps that allow parents to mirror their child’s device, ensuring they can see what their child is doing online," he explained. "You have the right to go through your child’s phone, check their picture roll, and be proactive in ensuring their safety."
The SVU's reach extends beyond local cases, with Williams making it clear that online predators targeting Amarillo’s children will be pursued relentlessly, no matter their location. "Whether you're in another state or even another country, if you try to exploit Amarillo's children, we will track you down. We will find you, and we will bring you to justice," he asserted.
In addition to making arrests, the department’s investigators are actively analyzing phones and computers seized from individuals suspected of involvement in child exploitation. Using advanced investigative techniques, the SVU is working to identify and apprehend offenders to prevent further harm to the community’s children.
The Amarillo Police Department’s proactive approach serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of law enforcement adapting to the digital age. As the internet continues to present new risks, parents are urged to stay vigilant, maintain open communication with their children, and utilize available tools to monitor their online activity. By working together, law enforcement and parents can help protect young people from the dangers lurking in the digital world.
