A 48-year-old woman has been arrested following a deadly hit-and-run crash Wednesday night on Bell Street that left one pedestrian dead and another person seriously injured.
Amarillo police identified the suspect as Laurah Jean Koenig, who was arrested on a charge of collision involving personal injury or death and booked into the Randall County Jail.
Officers responded to the 4100 block of Bell Street after receiving a report of a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. While police were on their way, a second call came in reporting that another pedestrian had been struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.
According to investigators, a white Dodge Ram was traveling south on Bell Street when the driver entered the center turn lane to turn onto Granada Drive. At the same time, a pedestrian was crossing Bell Street from east to west.
The pickup struck the pedestrian, knocking them into the northbound lanes of traffic.
The Dodge Ram driver got out of the truck to check on the injured pedestrian. Moments later, both were struck by a dark-colored GMC Sierra pickup that continued driving without stopping.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The Dodge Ram driver was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police located Koenig a short time after the crash and took her into custody.
Judge Garcia Flores ordered an autopsy to determine the pedestrian's cause of death. As of Wednesday night, authorities had not notified the victim's next of kin, and the pedestrian's identity had not been released.
The crash remains under investigation.
