There are rivalry wins, and then there are the kind of wins that send an entire student section pouring onto the court.

Tascosa delivered the latter Tuesday night.

The Lady Rebels put together their biggest volleyball victory in years, stunning arch-rival Amarillo High in four sets, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23. As soon as the final point hit the floor, Tascosa students rushed the court to celebrate an upset more than a decade in the making.

Tascosa hadn’t beaten Amarillo High since Oct. 12, 2010.

That alone would have made this one special. But the Lady Rebels also brought one of the most impressive streaks in Texas Panhandle volleyball to a crashing halt.

Amarillo High entered the night having won 74 consecutive district matches, a remarkable run stretching back to 2020. Tascosa not only ended the streak but also made the District 3-5A race a whole lot more interesting.

The Lady Rebels improved to 18-13 overall and 8-1 in district play, pulling even with Amarillo High (22-9, 8-1) for a share of first place.

Early on, however, it looked like another typical night for the Lady Sandies.

AHS came in as the heavy favorite and played like it in the opening set, grabbing the momentum with a 25-21 victory. Considering Amarillo High’s history of dominating district competition, it was easy to wonder whether win No. 75 was already taking shape.

Tascosa had other plans.

The Lady Rebels responded with a 25-23 victory in the second set, and with every point, their confidence seemed to grow. The third set turned into a battle, with Tascosa eventually grinding out a 26-24 win to take a 2-1 advantage.

By then, the atmosphere had completely changed.

Instead of waiting for Amarillo High to take control, Tascosa was making the plays that decided the match.

Libero Emily Caviness seemed to be everywhere defensively, finishing with a team-high 32 digs. When Amarillo High tried to build momentum offensively, Caviness repeatedly kept points alive and gave the Lady Rebels another opportunity.

Then Tascosa's hitters went to work.

Presley Ward delivered one of the best performances of her season, pounding down 17 kills while adding 29 digs for a double-double. Blaire Whatley and Harlan Singleton gave Amarillo High even more problems at the net, finishing with 16 kills apiece.

The Lady Rebels also received tremendous production from their setters. Presley Neslage handed out a team-high 28 assists, while Ellen Daniel was right behind her with 27.

That balance proved critical. Amarillo High couldn't simply key on one Tascosa hitter because another threat was waiting.

The fourth set became another nail-biter, but this time Tascosa wasn't going to let the opportunity slip away. The Lady Rebels held on 25-23, setting off a celebration that told you everything you needed to know about what this victory meant.

Amarillo High still had several standout performances despite the loss. Dillan Ray finished with 44 assists and 21 digs for a double-double, while Ansley Davis collected 26 digs. Vaughan led the attack with 19 kills.

But this night belonged to Tascosa.

The Lady Rebels beat their biggest rival for the first time in nearly 16 years, ended a 74-match district winning streak and turned the District 3-5A championship race into a dead heat.

And judging by the students celebrating on the court afterward, nobody wearing Tascosa colors will forget this one anytime soon.
