From jail population numbers and a school evacuation to a neighborhood groundwater dispute, several issues are drawing attention across Amarillo. Here’s a look at some of the latest news and upcoming events around the community.
Potter County Jail Remains at 91% Capacity Despite Inmate Decrease
The Potter County Jail remains at 91% capacity this week despite a slight decline in the overall inmate population.
Potter County’s weekly jail report shows 610 inmates in county custody, down 10 from last week. Of those, 543 are being held at the Potter County Jail and 67 are housed at other facilities.
The jail has a capacity of 599 inmates, while the average weekly population currently stands at 615. County officials have set a goal of operating the jail at 80% capacity, which would mean housing about 479 inmates at the facility.
Tascosa High School Returns to Normal After Tip Deemed Not Credible
Classes returned to normal at Tascosa High School after authorities determined a tip that prompted an evacuation was not credible.
Students were evacuated while officers with the Amarillo Police Department and Amarillo ISD Police investigated the report. Authorities also used an explosives detection dog to search the school.
After completing the investigation and search, officials gave the all-clear and students were allowed to return to class.
West Hills Residents Hear Details on Country Club Groundwater Leases
West Hills residents and other property owners met Tuesday evening with an Amarillo Country Club representative to discuss proposed long-term leases for groundwater rights.
The meeting followed concerns surrounding the club’s groundwater use. The Panhandle Groundwater Conservation District reported in August that the country club had pumped water from two wells that were not included in its operating permit, resulting in fines.
In September, residents shared letters on social media reportedly offering property owners $500 for 50-year groundwater rights leases within a roughly 100-acre area near the club. The agreements would allow the country club to add acreage to its groundwater rights as it works to meet district requirements.
Organizers said the meeting was intended to explain the proposal, provide accurate information and give property owners an opportunity to ask questions before deciding whether to sign a lease.
