District volleyball is officially underway across the Texas Panhandle, and several area teams wasted no time making an early statement Tuesday night.

Canyon, Randall and West Plains all opened District 4-4A play with victories, while Amarillo High continued its remarkable run through District 3-5A with another dominant performance.

Canyon takes care of Hereford in four

The Canyon Lady Eagles carried their strong non-district play right into the district opener, beating Hereford in four sets, 25-18, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20, at Joe Lombard Gymnasium.

Canyon improved to 19-6 overall and, more importantly, started District 4-4A play at 1-0.

The Lady Eagles looked ready to make quick work of the match after taking the first two sets. Hereford had other plans, battling back to win the third and forcing Canyon to finish the job in the fourth.

That’s when the Lady Eagles leaned on Laney Jones and Neelie Hanson.

Jones was everywhere. She hammered down 20 kills and backed that up with 24 digs for a monster double-double. Hanson supplied another 12 kills to give Canyon plenty of punch at the net.

Brylee McElroy kept the offense moving with 20 assists, while Keagan Cantu turned in a strong defensive night with 17 digs.

Hereford dropped to 14-15 overall and 0-1 in district despite getting 13 kills from Karizma Rivera and 12 from Layla Mendoza.

Randall responds after dropping first set

Randall had to shake off a slow start on the road at Dumas, but once the Lady Raiders found their rhythm, they took complete control.

After losing the opening set 26-24, Randall won the next three by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-10 to secure a four-set victory.

The Lady Raiders’ front row proved to be too much for Dumas.

Chloe Brown delivered a big-time performance with 18 kills and 19 digs for a double-double. Amber Matthews added 15 kills, while Camryn Massengale chipped in another 10.

Randall improved to 23-5 overall and 1-0 in district. Dumas fell to 14-9 and 0-1.

West Plains finishes strong at Pampa

West Plains also started district play on the right foot, earning a four-set road victory against Pampa, 25-20, 21-25, 25-13, 25-12.

After the Lady Harvesters evened the match at one set apiece, the Lady Wolves slammed the door.

West Plains dominated the final two sets, allowing only 25 combined points while pulling away for the victory.

Teagan Hudson led the attack with 18 kills, and Idaly Sotelo was outstanding on the back row with 28 digs.

The Lady Wolves moved to 16-11 overall and 1-0 in district. Pampa, also 16-11 overall, dropped to 0-1 in league play.

Amarillo High makes another district statement

At this point, Amarillo High’s dominance in District 3-5A is becoming one of the most impressive streaks in Texas Panhandle volleyball.

The Lady Sandies went on the road Tuesday and swept previously unbeaten Frenship, 25-14, 25-7, 25-21, at the Tiger Pit in Wolfforth.

This wasn’t just another district victory. It was a message.

Amarillo High improved to 19-8 overall and took complete control of the district race at 5-0. The Lady Sandies also extended their incredible district winning streak to 72 consecutive matches dating back to 2020.

Frenship entered the night 4-0 in district but never found much of an answer for AHS.

The Lady Sandies controlled the net, passed well and turned the second set into a rout.

Sophomore Harper Vaughan led the way with a huge 21-kill performance. Middle blocker Hattie Freeman added 11 kills and four blocks, Dillan Ray dished out 35 assists, and Ansley Davis anchored the defense with 17 digs.

Frenship fell to 20-10 overall and 4-1 in district. Reese Roberts led the Lady Tigers with 11 kills, while Madison Ryan finished with six kills and six digs. Emery Ingram added 11 assists.

Tascosa bounces back

Tascosa didn’t let its first district loss linger very long.

The Lady Rebels responded Tuesday with a convincing road sweep of Lubbock High, 25-16, 25-11, 25-10.

Presley Neslage ran the offense with 25 assists, and the combination of Presley Ward and Blaire Whatley did plenty of damage at the net. Ward finished with 10 kills and Whatley added nine.

Tascosa improved to 4-1 in District 3-5A and remains right in the thick of the race behind Amarillo High.

Lubbock High dropped to 13-16 overall and 1-4 in district.

Lubbock-Cooper Defeats Daprock

After dropping two straight matches, Lubbock-Cooper found the win column again with a sweep of Caprock, 25-22, 25-13, 25-13.

The Lady Pirates improved to 21-7 overall and 3-2 in district.

Broox Lopez turned in a strong all-around performance with 18 assists and 10 kills for a double-double.

Caprock fell to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in district.

Monterey sweeps Palo Duro

Lubbock Monterey closed out Tuesday’s action with a convincing sweep of Palo Duro, 25-12, 25-13, 25-7.

The Lady Plainsmen improved to 14-10 overall and 3-2 in District 3-5A.

With district play now underway in 4-4A and the 3-5A race beginning to take shape, Tuesday offered an early look at which teams could be playing meaningful volleyball deep into October. Canyon, Randall and West Plains all got the start they wanted, while Amarillo High once again showed everyone that the road to a district championship still runs directly through the Lady Sandies.
