West Texas A&M University President Walter Wendler will retire effective Sept. 1, bringing to a close a decade-long tenure that has shaped the university’s growth and identity across the Texas Panhandle.
The announcement was made by West Texas A&M University on Tuesday, marking the end of Wendler’s 10 years as president of the institution commonly known as “The Panhandle’s University.”
Wendler reflected on his time at WT and expressed gratitude to the university community that helped support its mission and growth.
“Universities earn confidence the right way, through clarity of mission, responsible stewardship and service to the public good,” Wendler said. “I am grateful to the faculty, staff, students, alumni and community partners who make WT what it is: The Panhandle’s University. WT’s future is bright thanks to the character of its people and the strength of its purpose.”
During his decade as president, Wendler became one of the most recognizable higher education leaders in the region. His administration emphasized student success, campus development, academic excellence and community engagement while strengthening WT’s role as a regional educational and economic driver.
Before arriving at West Texas A&M, Wendler built a lengthy career in higher education leadership. According to the university, he served as a professor of architecture and later as chancellor of Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He also held several leadership positions within The Texas A&M University System, including serving as vice chancellor for planning for two years.
Leaders within the Texas A&M System praised Wendler’s contributions to both the university and the broader region.
“Walter Wendler has given a decade of steady and consequential service to West Texas A&M University and to the people of the Texas Panhandle,” said Robert L. Albritton, chairman of the Board of Regents of The Texas A&M University System.
Wendler’s retirement closes a significant chapter for the Canyon-based university. Throughout his tenure, WT expanded its academic offerings, strengthened partnerships with communities throughout the Panhandle and continued efforts to increase access to higher education for students across the region.
The university has long served as a key institution for workforce development, teacher education, agriculture, business and healthcare-related fields in rural and urban communities throughout the Texas Panhandle. Under Wendler’s leadership, WT continued to position itself as an institution focused on serving the needs of the region while maintaining its connection to the Texas A&M University System.
The announcement also begins the process of identifying the university’s next leader. While WT has not yet released details regarding a presidential search, the transition will mark one of the most significant leadership changes at the institution in recent years.
As the university prepares for that transition, officials emphasized confidence in WT’s future and the foundation established during Wendler’s presidency.
Wendler will remain in his role through Sept. 1, concluding a career at West Texas A&M University that spans a decade of leadership, service and stewardship of one of the Texas Panhandle’s most influential institutions.
