In a late-summer development that is already sending ripple effects through the Amarillo / Canyon high school athletics community, Claude Independent School District announced Tuesday night during a board meeting that Trevor Johnson will transition into the role of principal at Claude High School.
The timing of the move—arriving in mid-June—caught many by surprise, particularly those who have followed Johnson’s steady rise through the coaching ranks. Known primarily for his long tenure in athletics, Johnson has spent the past 14 years at Randall High School, including a significant stretch as a key assistant under the late Leslie Broadhurst before stepping into the head boys basketball coaching role over the last two seasons.
A Coaching Run Defined by Growth and Success
Johnson’s time leading the Raiders’ program marked a strong competitive stretch. Over two seasons at the helm, he guided Randall to 46 wins, along with deep postseason runs that included appearances in a regional championship game and a regional semifinal. Those results further cemented the program’s reputation as one of the more consistent contenders in its classification.
Much of Johnson’s coaching identity was shaped during his years working under Broadhurst, where he absorbed the foundation of a program built on discipline, consistency, and player development. As he moves into administration, those lessons are expected to influence his leadership approach off the court.
A Decision Driven by Family and Long-Term Goals
The move away from coaching did not come lightly. Johnson has indicated that the demands of the job, particularly the year-round intensity of basketball at a high level, played a major role in his decision. With two school-aged children, he prioritized the opportunity to be more present in their daily lives while stepping into a new professional challenge.
At the same time, the administrative opening at Claude presented a career path Johnson had long considered. With a background influenced by his father’s experience in educational leadership and aspirations that include eventually becoming a superintendent, the transition aligns with his broader long-term ambitions in education.
Turning the Page in Claude
For Claude ISD, the hire represents more than a personnel change—it signals an investment in a leader with a strong background in both athletics and campus culture. Johnson steps into the role with experience navigating high-performance environments, managing young athletes, and working within established winning traditions.
He also leaves behind a program at Randall that appears to be in stable condition. His development of players and continuation of the team’s competitive identity have positioned the Raiders to remain a factor moving forward, even as they prepare for a new era on the sidelines.
Looking Ahead
As Johnson begins his tenure at Claude High School, expectations will extend beyond athletics into the broader academic and campus environment. His track record suggests a leadership style rooted in development, structure, and long-term growth—qualities that Claude ISD is betting will translate well from the basketball court to school administration.
