Amarillo organizations and institutions continue to make strides in serving residents through facility improvements, educational opportunities and public accountability. Recent announcements highlight investments in senior services, workforce training and municipal excellence.

55+ Club Receives $350,000 in Capital Campaign Gifts

The 55+ Club of Amarillo has received two major gifts totaling $350,000 for its ongoing capital campaign to renovate its building at 2404 S.W. Sixth Ave. into a new senior activities center.

Formerly known as the Amarillo Senior Citizens Association, the organization was established in 1973 and reorganized as the 55+ Club last year. Since launching its fundraising efforts in 2021, the club has worked to transform the facility into a modern space for senior programming. Phase one renovations include upgrades to electrical and HVAC systems, along with the creation of a reception area and multiuse spaces. With the latest contributions, the organization has raised nearly 40% of its phase one fundraising goal and is seeking matching gifts from community members and businesses to secure an additional $350,000.

Amarillo College Sets Fire Academy Physical Ability Tests

Amarillo College will conduct physical ability tests in June and July for prospective students seeking admission to its Fire Academy.

The test, which simulates activities commonly encountered on fire scenes, is a required component of the admissions process. Practice sessions are scheduled for June 27 and July 1 at 9 a.m. at the First Responders Academy. While registration is encouraged, walk-in participants will be accepted. Advisers will also be available during testing days to assist applicants with completing Fire Academy enrollment requirements. Fall semester classes begin Aug. 24, and graduates who successfully complete certification exams may pursue firefighting careers throughout Texas and across the country.

City of Amarillo Earns National Triple Crown Recognition

The City of Amarillo has been recognized as a 2024 Triple Crown Winner by the Government Finance Officers Association, one of the highest honors in governmental financial management.

The distinction is awarded to governments that earn the GFOA's Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award and Distinguished Budget Presentation Award during the same fiscal year. Amarillo was among just 441 governments nationwide to receive the designation for fiscal year 2024. Chief Financial Officer Lola Ogunremi said the achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of city leadership, departments and staff, and underscores the city's commitment to transparency, accountability and effective financial communication.
