Local governments across the Texas Panhandle have full agendas this week, while residents can look ahead to community events, falling gas prices and opportunities for pet services. Here is a look at some of the latest developments from around the region.
Canyon City Commission to Meet Tuesday
The Canyon City Commission will meet Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in City Commission Chambers, 301 16th St. Commissioners are scheduled to hold a public hearing on the rezoning of several plats of land and discuss a water conservation plan, a potential downtown revitalization grant partnership with the Canyon Economic Development Corporation, the hiring of three full-time firefighters, street maintenance services on Hunsley Road and an interlocal agreement with Randall County for use of the Courthouse Square during special events. Public comments will also be accepted.
Dumas Commission Faces Busy Agenda
The Dumas City Commission will meet Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in City Commission Chambers, 124 E. Seventh St. Agenda items include consideration of Commissioner Blacksher’s resignation, requests from the Dumas/Moore County Chamber for a visitor gift and souvenir shop authorization and cost-sharing assistance for the Dumas Downtown Division. Commissioners will also discuss a proposed increase in gas utility fees, authorize a golf cart lease, consider donating the city’s smoke and safety trailer to the Stratford Fire Department and hear reports from the city manager and department staff. Public comments will be welcomed.
Borger City Council to Review Financial Matters
The Borger City Council will meet Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Council Chambers, 600 N. Main St. Council members will review expenditures for the first half of June, examine year-to-date financial reports and consider a bid submitted through the Texas Communities Group online bidding process. The council is also expected to consider a resolution declaring Police Unit 1014 as surplus property and authorizing its transfer to South Plains College at the request of Police Chief Donald Davis. A public comment period is included on the agenda.
Jackson Announces Service Academy Appointments
U.S. Rep. Ronny Jackson announced the nomination and acceptance of three area students into U.S. military service academies and preparatory programs. Emily Sims of Tascosa High School was accepted into the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, Barrett Stroud of Amarillo High School received an appointment to the United States Military Academy and James Bland III of West Plains High School received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy.
Amarillo Gas Prices Continue to Fall
Drivers in Amarillo are seeing relief at the pump as the average price of gasoline dropped 7.5 cents per gallon over the past week to $3.46 per gallon Monday, according to GasBuddy. Prices are 50.9 cents lower than one month ago, though still 90.3 cents higher than a year ago. The cheapest reported gas station price in Amarillo was $3.28 per gallon Sunday, while the highest was $3.89, a difference of 61 cents. Across Texas, prices ranged from $2.97 to $5.49 per gallon.
Free Pet Voucher Clinic Scheduled in North Heights
The City of Amarillo Animal Management and Welfare Department will host a free pet spay and neuter voucher clinic June 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hines Memorial Park, 1300 N.W. 18th Ave. North Heights residents may receive vouchers for up to four pets per household for free surgeries through participating veterinary clinics, along with complimentary microchips and vaccinations. Residents must bring their pets, provide proof of residency and ensure animals are at least four months old. Vouchers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Amarillo Red, White, & Boom Set for July 4
The City of Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department and Outdoor Amarillo will host the annual “Amarillo Red, White, & Boom” celebration July 4 at John Stiff Park. The free event begins at 5 p.m. and will feature live music, food trucks, a beer garden, a children’s fun zone and a sand volleyball tournament. Free parking and shuttle service will be available from several locations throughout the city. The evening will conclude with a fireworks and drone show celebrating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, although officials noted the fireworks display could be rescheduled if weather or environmental conditions create safety concerns.
