Amarillo residents have several opportunities in the coming days to provide input on transportation and parks initiatives while city officials continue to address public safety and community events. Here is a look at several items making news.
Transit Department Seeks Public Input on Bus Route Changes
Amarillo City Transit has scheduled a series of public engagement meetings to gather resident feedback on possible modifications to the city's fixed-route bus system. The meetings will give community members an opportunity to review proposed routes, ask questions and share comments about the future of public transportation in Amarillo.
Meetings are scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Downtown Library, Thursday at the Northwest Branch Library, Monday, June 15, at the North Branch Library, Wednesday, June 17, at the East Branch Library and Thursday, June 18, at the Southwest Branch Library. Residents are also encouraged to complete a transportation survey available on the city's website at amarillo.gov.
Parks Board to Discuss Pools, Park Improvements and Public Feedback Initiative
The Amarillo Parks and Recreation Board will meet Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. on the third floor of City Hall, 623 S. Johnson St.
Among the topics on the agenda is the aquatic feasibility study for the Southwest and Southeast pools, including potential improvements, costs and future plans. Board members will also review the current state of city parks, including maintenance, operations, improvements and future needs. In addition, the board will discuss policies and procedures for renaming parks, including criteria, historical significance and the approval process for future name changes.
The board will also introduce and discuss a new community engagement initiative called "Your Parks, Your Voice." Public comments on agenda items will be accepted, with each speaker limited to three minutes.
Motorcyclist Killed in Hughes Street Overpass Crash
A 31-year-old man was killed Monday in a crash involving two motorcycles and an SUV on the Hughes Street overpass near Southwest First Avenue.
According to a preliminary investigation by the Amarillo Police Department, two motorcycles were traveling north on Hughes Street when one rider lost control and collided head-on with an SUV. The motorcyclist, identified as Travis Babcock, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A second motorcyclist also lost control while attempting to avoid the SUV and crashed. APD Public Information Officer Sgt. Carla Burr said the second motorcycle rider and the SUV driver were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. The department's Traffic Investigation Unit continues to investigate the crash.
APD Advises Golf Classic Attendees to Use Shuttle Service
The Amarillo Police Department is encouraging attendees of the OccuNet Golf Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank at La Paloma Golf Course to plan ahead due to limited parking and traffic restrictions in the area.
Officials said parking at the course will be extremely limited and traffic lanes near the venue will be reduced throughout the event. Complimentary parking will be available at Amarillo College West Campus from Thursday through Sunday, with ADA-accessible shuttle service operating to and from the golf course beginning each day at 6:15 a.m.
