The City of Hereford is taking a significant step toward improving accessibility and recreation opportunities with plans to install all-inclusive playground equipment at the John Bunch Complex.
The project received a major boost after the Hereford Economic Development Corporation (EDC) approved up to $3 million in funding, far exceeding the city’s original request of $250,000. According to city officials, the funding comes from the EDC’s reserve fund and follows voter approval allowing the money to be used for improvements across multiple city parks.
Community leaders say the goal is to create recreational spaces that can be enjoyed by children of all abilities. To help shape the project, city officials are inviting residents to participate in a community meeting scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Hereford City Hall.
The meeting will bring together community members, educators, and others interested in improving local parks. Officials are particularly seeking input from teachers who work with students with disabilities, as their experience and insight can help guide decisions on equipment and park design.
City leaders hope the discussion will provide a clear vision for the all-inclusive playground while also identifying additional opportunities to enhance parks throughout Hereford. If funding remains after the playground project is completed, the city plans to direct the remaining money toward upgrades at other parks.
Hereford maintains 12 public parks, seven of which are primarily landscaped areas intended for residents to enjoy as attractive community spaces. Officials say the broader park improvement effort is designed to benefit residents across the city and create more welcoming outdoor environments for families.
