An 11-year-old boy injured in Wednesday's gang-related shooting at the Plum Creek Apartments is facing a long road to recovery after being struck by gunfire while spending part of his summer break at the community pool.
Julian, 11, was one of six people wounded in the shooting. He suffered two gunshot wounds and was airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, where he was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for treatment.
His mother, Adrianna Duran, has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover the mounting costs associated with his recovery, including medical expenses, physical therapy, travel, and other ongoing needs.
According to the fundraiser, Julian's injuries have left him temporarily confined to a wheelchair, and he will need extensive rehabilitation to relearn how to walk. During surgery, doctors discovered that the damage caused by one of the bullets was far more extensive than initially believed.
The projectile caused a significant fracture to Julian's femur, with the break extending down the length of the bone. Surgeons were required to install a larger fixation plate and additional screws to stabilize the injury due to its severity.
Despite undergoing surgery, Julian will continue to live with a bullet fragment remaining in his body. His recovery is expected to include months of physical therapy and the use of both a wheelchair and a walker as he works to regain mobility.
The burden of recovery also extends beyond the medical challenges. Duran, a single mother, will need to take time away from work to care for her son. The family is also expected to make frequent trips between Amarillo and Lubbock for medical appointments and rehabilitation services.
Family members are asking the community for prayers and support as Julian continues his recovery journey.
The fundraiser, titled Support Julian's Healing After the Shooting, has been created to assist the family with the financial and logistical challenges they now face.
