Fischer completes storybook finish at inaugural OccuNet Classic

The inaugural OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank delivered a dramatic conclusion Sunday afternoon at Tascosa Golf Club’s La Paloma course, where Zack Fischer secured a memorable victory in front of a packed gallery.

Fischer’s triumph marked one of the most inspiring stories on the Korn Ferry Tour this season. The 36-year-old veteran captured his first Korn Ferry Tour title after 171 career starts, overcoming years of uncertainty and limited playing status to finally reach the winner’s circle.

Entering the final round at 13-under par after a brilliant third-round 62, Fischer carried a one-shot lead into Sunday. Cooler temperatures and tougher scoring conditions made the final round a challenge for the entire field, but Fischer remained steady throughout most of the day.

After opening with two pars, he moved to 14-under with a birdie on the third hole and played consistent golf through the remainder of the front nine. Another birdie at No. 11 strengthened his position before adversity struck on the 14th hole. An errant shot that went out of bounds led to a costly double bogey and dropped him back to 13-under.

Rather than unravel, Fischer responded like a champion. He regained momentum with a birdie at the par-3 16th hole, returning to 14-under and reclaiming control of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Ben Carr mounted a late charge. An eagle on the 17th hole followed by a birdie at 18 pushed Carr to 13-under and applied pressure to the tournament leader. With the margin narrowed to a single shot, Fischer needed pars on his final two holes. He calmly delivered, including a clutch three-foot par putt on the 18th green to seal the victory and earn the $180,000 winner’s prize.

The tournament also featured compelling local storylines. Randall High School graduate and University of New Mexico golfer Wyatt Provence entered the final round with momentum after a third-round 63. Provence opened Sunday with three consecutive birdies and climbed to 10-under, but difficulties on the closing stretch led to a 3-over 73. The lone amateur in the field finished tied for 35th at 4-under.

Another fan favorite was John Daly II, who attracted large galleries throughout the week. Competing in his first professional tournament, Daly II posted a final-round 69 to finish at even par and gain valuable experience.

For a first-year event, the OccuNet Classic delivered everything golf fans could ask for: dramatic swings, hometown support, emerging talent, and a long-awaited breakthrough victory.
