WT falls 8–6 to Oklahoma Christian in NCAA Super Regional

The NCAA South Central Super Regional delivered a dramatic split-day storyline on Friday as the #6 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs saw momentum swing away in a high-scoring Game 1 before weather interrupted a tense, unfinished Game 2 at Schaeffer Park. With a championship berth on the line in the NCAA South Central Super Regional, both teams left everything on the field, but it was the #22 Oklahoma Christian Eagles who ultimately held a narrow edge heading into Saturday’s continuation.

In Game 1, the West Texas A&M Lady Buffs struck first with authority. Jordyn De Los Santos opened the scoring with a milestone home run, setting a new single-season program and conference record while giving the Lady Buffs an early spark. That lead, however, quickly unraveled as the Oklahoma Christian Eagles capitalized on defensive lapses and timely hitting to build a multi-run advantage through the middle innings.

Oklahoma Christian’s offense found rhythm in the second and third frames, stringing together RBI singles, a bases-loaded walk, and a well-executed squeeze bunt that kept pressure on West Texas A&M. Additional scoring opportunities were converted in the fourth and fifth innings, aided by an error that extended the Eagles’ lead. By the middle of the game, West Texas A&M faced an uphill climb, trailing by a significant margin despite flashes of offensive production.

The Lady Buffs refused to fade quietly. In the sixth inning, they began chipping away with an RBI single that trimmed the deficit. The seventh inning brought their most explosive push, as a bases-loaded situation produced multiple runs through a combination of clutch hits and an additional defensive miscue by Oklahoma Christian. The rally brought the tying run into consideration and forced the Eagles to work through a tense finish. However, a sharply hit line drive turned into a double play, followed by a groundout that sealed the 8–6 result in favor of Oklahoma Christian.

Game 2 began later that evening at Schaeffer Park, and both teams opened with strong pitching performances, trading scoreless frames through two innings. West Texas A&M threatened in the third when a triple put a runner just 90 feet away with two outs, but before the at-bat could continue, lightning in the area forced an immediate suspension of play.

After a prolonged weather delay and worsening conditions, officials postponed the remainder of the contest. The game will resume Saturday morning in a tightly balanced situation, with both teams still fully alive in a winner-take-all setting that promises a tense finish to an already intense regional battle.
