Sod Poodles split doubleheader with RockHounds, finish historic 9-3 road trip

The Amarillo Sod Poodles wrapped up a demanding road stretch on Sunday by splitting a doubleheader with the Midland RockHounds at Momentum Bank Ballpark, taking Game 1 in convincing fashion before narrowly dropping Game 2 in extra innings. The split brought an end to a 12-game road trip in which Amarillo went 9–3, marking a franchise-best performance for a single trip away from home.

In Game 1, Amarillo’s offense wasted no time setting the tone. After Midland starting pitcher Arnold was helped by an early defensive miscue that extended the inning, the Sod Poodles quickly turned the opportunity into momentum. A sequence of sharp at-bats produced a steady stream of traffic and runs, with timely singles and productive outs pushing Amarillo ahead early. The breakthrough inning ultimately featured a balanced attack from the lineup, as multiple hitters contributed RBI knocks to build an insurmountable advantage.

The offensive pressure continued across the middle innings, with Amarillo adding to its lead through extra-base hits and consistent contact. By the time Midland’s starter exited, the Sod Poodles had built a commanding cushion, forcing the RockHounds to lean heavily on their bullpen. On the mound, Amarillo’s starter Avery Short delivered one of his strongest outings of the season, working efficiently through five scoreless innings while limiting baserunners and controlling the pace of the game. Although Midland managed to scratch across a pair of late runs against the Amarillo bullpen, the outcome was never seriously in doubt as the Sod Poodles secured a 9–2 victory.

Game 2 told a much different story, featuring tighter pitching and far fewer offensive openings. Amarillo struck first again, capitalizing on early baserunners to take a brief lead in the second inning. However, Midland responded quickly with a two-run double that flipped the game and shifted momentum back in their favor.

The Sod Poodles answered in the third with a solo home run from Manuel Peña, continuing his strong season at the plate and tying the game at two. From that point forward, both pitching staffs settled in, trading scoreless innings and keeping the contest deadlocked deep into the game. Amarillo’s bullpen, including key middle-inning contributions, helped maintain the tie, while Midland’s relievers matched zero for zero.

The decisive moment came in extras after both teams failed to capitalize on late scoring chances. Amarillo had an opportunity in the sixth after loading the bases, but could not bring a run home. That missed opportunity loomed large as Midland eventually broke through in the eighth with a walk-off single, handing the Sod Poodles a 3–2 defeat.

Despite the loss in the finale, Amarillo’s performance across the road trip highlighted both offensive depth and pitching consistency. The 9–3 stretch away from home stands as a significant early-season benchmark, reinforcing the team’s ability to compete in a variety of game situations. The Sod Poodles now return home with momentum and a winning record intact, ready to open the next chapter of their season in Amarillo.
