Here’s a look at a few key updates from around Amarillo and Canyon, spanning education, public safety, infrastructure and local government. From honoring standout teachers to reopening a neighborhood library, these brief items highlight the latest developments affecting residents across the area.
Amarillo ISD honors Teachers of the Year
Amarillo ISD has named Emily Stowers as its Elementary Teacher of the Year and Deepa Sobha as its Secondary Teacher of the Year, recognizing both at Friday’s Lamar Lively Teacher of the Year Breakfast. Stowers, a fifth-grade reading-language arts teacher at Western Plateau Elementary, brings 15 years of experience and is known for creating an immersive and meaningful reading environment for her students. Sobha, who teaches physics and UT OnRamps physics at Palo Duro High School, focuses on building confidence and curiosity, encouraging students to see their potential beyond the classroom. Both were selected from campus winners across all 52 district schools and will advance to the Region 16 Teacher of the Year competition later this summer.
North Branch Library set to reopen Monday
Officials with the Amarillo Public Library announced the North Branch Library will reopen Monday following a temporary closure for facility upgrades. The branch had been closed since April 13 for the installation of a new roof and HVAC systems, a project expected to take at least four weeks. Library officials say the improvements will enhance comfort for visitors and extend the building’s lifespan.
Police warn of sophisticated fraud scheme
Amarillo police are investigating a fraud case involving a complex scam that led to significant financial loss for a local resident. The victim was contacted by individuals posing as bank representatives who used fear tactics to convince her to withdraw cash and prepare it for delivery, even attempting to send rideshare drivers to her home. The victim eventually stopped communication, contacted family members and reported the incident. Investigators later determined her phone had likely been compromised through a malicious link or app. Authorities urge residents to stop contact immediately if they suspect a scam and report incidents to 806-378-4257.
