Second suspect charged with murder in deadly Westminster Apartments shooting

The Amarillo Police Department has filed a murder charge against a second suspect connected to the May 2 mass shooting at the Westminster Apartments that left two teenagers dead and 10 others injured.

Police announced that 20-year-old Eh Gay Htoo Win was formally charged with murder after investigators obtained a warrant tied to the ongoing homicide investigation. Win has remained in custody at the Potter County Detention Center since the day of the shooting, when he was initially arrested on charges of unlawful carrying of a weapon by a gang member, tampering with evidence, and failure to identify.

The latest development comes just one day after Amarillo homicide detectives announced that 17-year-old Jame Htoo had also been charged with murder in the case. Htoo was already being held in the Potter County Jail on unrelated charges that included evading arrest and a parole violation.

Investigators say the shooting erupted around 2 a.m. on May 2 at the Westminster Apartments in the 2400 block of South Coulter Street. According to police, a party had originally started at another residence before several attendees relocated to an apartment at Westminster after being asked to leave the first gathering.

Court records indicate tensions escalated earlier in the evening when a group of Asian males allegedly attempted to enter the original party location. Witnesses told police that one man, later identified as Win, appeared to be carrying a rifle-style weapon tucked into the front of his pants. The homeowners reportedly refused to let the group inside, fearing violence could occur.

The couple later traveled to the Westminster Apartments, where the gathering continued. Roughly 20 minutes after arriving, gunfire erupted.

Police said the suspects allegedly followed partygoers to the apartment complex, attempted to enter the apartment, and then opened fire using rifle-style weapons. Investigators recovered two AR-style rifles believed to have been used in the shooting.

The victims killed in the attack were identified as 17-year-old Ezekiel Almazan and 16-year-old Deven Antonucci. Ten additional people suffered injuries during the shooting.

During the investigation, detectives linked the suspects to a possible gang affiliation involving the Asian Pride Gang. Authorities later stopped a vehicle shortly after the shooting for a traffic violation and found Win riding in the front passenger seat. Officers reported seeing a backpack containing rifles placed in the trunk before the traffic stop.

According to court documents, ballistic evidence connected the rifles recovered from the vehicle to shell casings found at the crime scene. Witnesses later identified Win in a lineup as the individual seen earlier in the evening carrying a gray or silver rifle.

Investigators also tied Htoo to the case through surveillance footage that captured a suspect vehicle near the shooting scene. Police said Htoo was identified by distinctive clothing seen in the video, including a red hoodie with white lettering, baggy black pants, and Nike Panda Dunks sneakers. Detectives later recovered the hoodie during a search of Htoo’s residence in Potter County.

Despite the two murder arrests, police say the investigation remains active and a third suspect is still being sought.

In a statement released Thursday, Amarillo police emphasized that investigators are continuing to pursue additional charges related to the 10 surviving victims injured in the shooting. Authorities said homicide detectives and members of the department’s PACE Unit are continuing to gather evidence and follow leads.

The shooting has drawn significant attention in Amarillo because of the large number of victims and the young ages of those killed. As investigators continue working the case, police are urging anyone with information about the remaining suspect to contact Amarillo Crime Stoppers or the Amarillo Police Department.
