TxDOT to Host Public Meeting on Proposed Amarillo Improvements

The Texas Department of Transportation will host a public input meeting Thursday to discuss proposed infrastructure changes in Amarillo. According to public information officer Jason Britsch, plans include removing the pedestrian bridge at North McMasters Street and West Amarillo Boulevard, adding shared-use paths or widened sidewalks, and upgrading the traffic signal at Western Street and RM 1061. Additional lighting and possible two-way frontage road lanes are also under consideration. The meeting will be held in person from 2–4 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. at Amarillo College West Campus Lecture Hall, 6222 SW Ninth Avenue, or viewed online starting at 2 p.m. Public comments will be accepted through May 22.

Police Investigate Late-Night Shooting on North Cleveland

The Amarillo Police Department is investigating a shooting reported late Tuesday night in the 2000 block of North Cleveland. Officers responded around 11:23 p.m. after reports of gunfire and found a vehicle that had been struck. No injuries were reported, and no suspects had been identified as of Wednesday morning. The case is being handled by the department’s Violent Crimes Unit.

City to Honor Junior Achievement BizTown Student Mayors

The Amarillo City Council and Cole Stanley will recognize 28 Junior Achievement BizTown student mayors during a ceremony Wednesday at 4 p.m. in City Hall. The event celebrates participants in Junior Achievement of the High Plains, which prepares young people for future success. Students will sit on the council dais, receive certificates, and be honored for their leadership contributions.

Pantex to Mark Completion of New Explosives Facility

Officials with Pantex Plant will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday for its new High Explosive Science and Engineering Facility. The project, which began in April 2022, spans more than 72,000 square feet and replaces multiple Cold War-era buildings. The Pantex Plant covers about 16,000 acres and supports maintenance, dismantling, storage, and research involving nuclear weapons components.

Suspect Arrested After Early Morning Vehicle Pursuit

A 19-year-old man, identified as Isaac Matthews, faces multiple charges following a vehicle pursuit early Wednesday morning, according to the Amarillo Police Department. Officers initially responded to a crash near Southwest 4th and McMasters around 2:30 a.m. and later spotted a vehicle believed to be involved. A short pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle struck a parked car. Matthews fled on foot but was apprehended and booked into the Potter County Jail on charges including evading arrest and driving while intoxicated. No injuries were reported.

City Boards Consider Livestreaming Public Meetings

The City of Amarillo is moving toward expanded transparency with potential livestreaming of additional public meetings. Kristen Wolbach, director of the Office of Engagement and Innovation, recently outlined plans to pilot livestreaming for boards with higher public interest. The planning and zoning commission is expected to meet May 18 in City Hall chambers, which are equipped for livestreaming, while the parks and recreation board will discuss a similar move at its May 13 meeting. Livestreams are available via the city’s website and YouTube channel.
