As summer activities begin and city leaders prepare for another busy week of business, Amarillo residents are seeing updates that range from pool schedules to public safety investigations. Community members also gathered recently to honor veterans whose service and sacrifice continue to leave a lasting impact across the region.

City Announces 2026 Pool Season Schedule

The City of Amarillo announced that its 2026 summer pool season will run from May 23 through Labor Day on Sept. 7, with city splash pads remaining open through the holiday weekend as well. Officials reminded residents that Thompson Park Pool, located at 3500 E. Chaparral Rd., will be the city’s only outdoor pool operating this season. Pre-sale tickets, season passes, swimming lessons, and pool party information are available online through the city’s parks and recreation department.

APD Investigating Early Morning Shooting

The Amarillo Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred early Monday in the 3900 block of South Tyler Street. Officers responding to reports of gunfire located a man suffering from serious injuries, and he was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Detectives with the Violent Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigation Unit continue to investigate the incident, which preliminary information indicates may be connected to domestic violence. No arrests had been made as of Monday morning.

Amarillo City Council to Review Major Projects, Contracts

The Amarillo City Council is scheduled to meet today at 3 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 623 S. Johnson to discuss a wide range of city business. Agenda items include updates on the city’s new Water Utility Billing system, Parks and Recreation operations, budget amendments, and a proposed AI and data center moratorium. Council members are also expected to consider several major contracts and infrastructure projects, including a $14 million agreement for the Lawrence Lake Pump Station and Force Water Main Project, a $7.5 million contract for street paving materials, and improvements tied to TIRZ #1 streetscaping and traffic signal upgrades.

Families Honor Veterans at VA Memorial Ceremony

Friends and family members of 89 veterans gathered Thursday morning at the Thomas E. Creek VA Medical Center to honor loved ones during a memorial brick-laying ceremony. Amarillo VA Chaplain John Elser led attendees in prayer and reflection while Samantha Artho performed “The Star-Spangled Banner.” As engraved bricks were placed into the memorial patio, many family members paused to salute, pray, or remember the veterans being honored. Dr. Rodney Gonzalez, director of the Amarillo VA Health Care System, told attendees the ceremony recognized not only names, but also the sacrifice, courage, and service each veteran represented.
