President Donald Trump intensified his criticism of the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday, attacking certain conservative justices over recent decisions involving tariffs and signaling skepticism about the court’s direction on birthright citizenship. The remarks came in a lengthy post on his social media platform, Truth Social, where he accused members of the court of failing to consistently support his agenda.
Trump specifically took aim at what he described as ideological inconsistency among conservative justices. “certain” conservative justices on the Supreme Court have “gone weak, stupid, and bad,” he wrote, criticizing them for a recent tariff ruling and broader judicial decisions he views as unfavorable.
In his post, Trump contrasted conservative justices with their liberal counterparts, arguing that ideological divisions on the court are asymmetrical. “The Democrat Justices stick together like glue, NEVER failing to wander from the warped and perverse policies, ideas, and cases put before them,” he wrote, claiming conservatives on the court have given Democrats “win after win” by doing the opposite. He further stated, “No, certain ‘Republican’ Justices have just gone weak, stupid, and bad, completely violating what they ‘supposedly’ stood for.”
The president has increasingly directed criticism toward Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, both of whom he appointed during his first term. Both justices joined Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s liberal bloc in a 6-3 ruling in February that struck down a significant portion of Trump’s tariff policy. The court determined that the administration’s expanded use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) exceeded presidential authority, a decision that dealt a major setback to one of Trump’s key economic initiatives.
The ruling has since sparked ongoing debate about financial consequences and enforcement, particularly regarding tariffs already collected. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the agency responsible for collecting import duties, recently opened a portal to process refund requests for importers and brokers who paid under the invalidated tariff scheme.
Trump criticized the refund process sharply, calling it a burden on the country’s finances. “Handing over 159 Billion Dollars in Tariff refunds to people who have been Ripping Off our Country for years, is unexplainable,” he wrote. “One little sentence would have stoped this record setting payment from having to be made. It is a travesty!”
He further described the refund process itself as a “travesty,” while suggesting that companies seeking reimbursement could face political consequences in the future. In earlier remarks, he indicated that businesses choosing not to pursue refunds would be viewed more favorably.
Beyond tariffs, Trump also warned about another looming Supreme Court decision involving birthright citizenship. The administration has argued for narrowing the interpretation of the 14th Amendment, a position that has met skepticism from several justices during oral arguments earlier this month, which Trump attended in person.
“If they rule against our Country on Birthright Citizenship, which they probably will, it will be even worse, if that’s possible,” Trump wrote on Wednesday. “It will cost America massive amounts of money but, more importantly, it will cost America its DIGNITY!”
