The Amarillo Sod Poodles (10-12) fell to the Midland RockHounds (17-5), 11-8, Tuesday at Momentum Bank Ballpark. Amarillo could not hold an 8-2 lead in the fifth and lost by three runs. The loss snapped Amarillo’s five-game winning streak and shifted momentum in the Texas League series in Texas League play. Midland capitalized late with a strong sixth inning rally in Texas League play. Game featured multiple lead changes.
Hits were limited early, but Amarillo still found baserunners. In the second, two Sod Poodles reached on walks from Corey Avant and scored on Angel Ortiz’s two-out double.
Leo De Vries broke up Daniel Eagen’s no-hit bid in the fourth with a fly ball that Junior Franco could not handle, which cleared the fence. Amarillo then committed two pickoff errors that allowed Midland to tie it 2-2.
James Gonzalez replaced Avant in the fifth, and Amarillo responded with three straight hits and a two-run triple by Cristofer Torin to retake the lead. The Sod Poodles added four more runs on seven hits in a big inning.
The RockHounds answered immediately in the sixth, scoring six runs. Midland used nine batters and three extra-base hits, capped by Luke Mann’s game-tying homer.
Alec Baker entered in relief but struggled through three innings as Midland kept pressure on. A walk to Shane McGuire led to the go-ahead run on a double by Clark Ellis down the line.
Midland added insurance runs later on RBI hits by De Vries and Cameron Leary, snapping Amarillo’s five-game winning streak.
