Amarillo Warbirds name Jimmy Johnson head coach after Jermaine Blakely exit

The Amarillo Warbirds have made a coaching change midway through in the 2026 season, parting ways with head coach Jermaine Blakely effective April 23. The move signals a shift in direction for the franchise just weeks into its return campaign at the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum.

Blakely played a key role in the organization’s foundation, helping guide the transition into the National Arena League and previously contributing as defensive coordinator during the team’s 2021 championship run when it competed as the West Texas Warbirds. His influence on the team’s early culture and identity was widely recognized, but leadership opted to make a change as the current season unfolded.

Stepping into the role is Jimmy Johnson, who brings nearly two decades of coaching and scouting experience to Amarillo. Johnson’s background includes 18 years in coaching and scouting, with a strong emphasis on player evaluation and development. His résumé also features eight years specifically in indoor football coaching and scouting, providing familiarity with the fast-paced, high-scoring nature of the NAL game.

Johnson has spent three years as a college head coach and five years directing combine operations for BSN’s National Scouting Combine, where he helped identify and prepare emerging talent. In addition, he brings six years of experience working with the College Gridiron Showcase, further strengthening his connections to the collegiate pipeline.

The Warbirds are hoping Johnson’s experience across multiple levels of the sport will translate into immediate stability and long-term growth. His hiring marks the beginning of what the organization is framing as a new era, with an emphasis on raising standards and reshaping the team’s competitive identity as the 2026 season continues.
