Texas Tech Health System to end UnitedHealthcare contract, impacting thousands of patients

Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) and Texas Tech Physicians (TTP) have announced a notice of termination for their Commercial and Medicare Advantage participation agreement with UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company. According to a press release obtained Monday, the contract is set to expire on March 31, 2026, if a new agreement is not reached.

The expiration of this contract could affect more than 30,000 patients who currently have in-network access to over 700 TTP providers across West Texas and the Panhandle. TTUHSC officials emphasized that the move is primarily due to longstanding disagreements over reimbursement rates, which have remained unchanged for 13 years despite rising healthcare costs.

Discussions between Texas Tech Physicians and UnitedHealthcare began in early 2025, focusing on the Amarillo, Lubbock, and Permian Basin campuses. The health system highlighted that the outdated rates have made it increasingly difficult to cover the rising expenses associated with patient care, prompting the decision to end the current agreement if no resolution is reached.

TTUHSC and TTP assure patients that they will continue to provide care even after the contract terminates, though services may be billed as out-of-network. This could result in higher out-of-pocket costs for those affected, and officials are encouraging patients to review their insurance options and prepare for potential changes in coverage.

UnitedHealthcare has advised members to stay informed about the ongoing negotiations and to reach out to customer service for specific questions regarding benefits and coverage during the transition period. Information is available through the phone number listed on insurance cards or on the insurer’s official website.

Healthcare experts note that such contract terminations are becoming more common as medical providers and insurance companies navigate rising costs, inflation, and long-standing reimbursement challenges. Patients in West Texas and the Panhandle may face a temporary disruption in in-network access to services while both parties work toward a new agreement.

TTUHSC and TTP stressed that the primary goal remains patient health and continuity of care. The health system encourages affected individuals to stay informed about updates and to plan ahead for any potential changes in their coverage.

With the termination date approaching, both organizations continue negotiations in an effort to resolve differences before March 31, 2026, but patients are advised to monitor the situation closely and explore alternative coverage options if necessary.
