Authorities in Moore County have arrested a suspect in connection with a sweeping mail theft scheme that may rank as the largest financial crime in the area’s history.
According to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation began in August 2024 after officials with the City of Dumas reported a theft involving business checks. What initially appeared to be an isolated incident quickly expanded into a complex, multi-year case involving widespread financial losses.
Investigators say numerous business checks were stolen after passing through the Dumas Post Office, ultimately impacting local businesses as well as companies in surrounding communities such as Muleshoe and Pampa, and even extending across state lines. Early estimates placed losses at just over $1 million, but authorities now believe the total could range between $2 million and $5 million.
The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division partnered with the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General to track the source of the thefts. Over the course of nearly two years, investigators gathered evidence while reports of missing checks continued to surface.
On March 19, officials obtained evidence establishing probable cause that a Dumas Post Office employee was responsible for the thefts. The suspect was arrested at the post office and later spoke with investigators, ultimately admitting to stealing numerous business checks over the course of the investigation.
The individual was booked into the Moore County Jail and later released on bond. Authorities have not publicly identified the suspect as the investigation remains ongoing.
