Panhandle basketball is having a moment, and now the Panthers have made sure it is one the town will never forget.
Just one week after the Panhandle girls celebrated their third state championship, the Panther boys delivered a title of their own Thursday night, defeating San Augustine 61-58 in the Class 2A Division I state championship game at the Alamodome. The win capped a remarkable run for a program that had never before reached the state tournament, let alone climbed all the way to the top.
Panhandle finished the season 27-6 and proved all night it was ready for the big stage. The Panthers controlled much of the game but had to survive a tense finish as San Augustine battled back late.
Panhandle led 27-24 at halftime and stretched the advantage to 42-37 entering the fourth quarter. Early in the final frame, the Panthers appeared to seize control when a bucket from guard Caden Armes pushed the lead to 11 with 6:40 remaining.
San Augustine refused to fade quietly.
The Wolves answered with a pair of 6-0 runs and trimmed the deficit to just one point with 2:35 left, sending tension through the Alamodome crowd. Panhandle responded immediately with a clutch layup from Broxton Robinson that pushed the lead back to three, and the Panthers never let the Wolves get any closer.
Armes led the way with a stellar all-around performance, finishing with 17 points, five assists, and four rebounds to earn championship game MVP honors. He calmly knocked down three of four free throws in the closing seconds to seal the victory.
Luke Schmucker and Cooper Brinkley each added 11 points, while Panhandle’s defense played a major role in the outcome. The Panthers limited San Augustine to just 38.9 percent shooting and held the Wolves to 1-of-10 from three-point range.
Max Renfro scored a game-high 22 points for San Augustine, but Panhandle’s balanced attack and defensive toughness proved to be the difference.
