The Amarillo Police Department has released details following a shooting that occurred early Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Don Harrington Discovery Center.
According to APD, officers were called to a local hospital around 2:28 a.m. on Feb. 28 after a patient arrived with a gunshot wound. Authorities confirmed the victim’s injuries were non-life-threatening.
Investigators say the shooting stemmed from a prior conflict. Police stated the injured person reported “he had been in a parking lot in the 1200 block of Streit Drive with friends when he was approached by a man with whom he had a prior argument the week before. The suspect allegedly made threats and left the area in a vehicle. A short time later, the suspect returned, shot the victim, and fled the scene again.”
The incident adds to growing concerns about late-night violence in public spaces across Amarillo. While the Discovery Center is typically known as a family-friendly destination for education and community events, the shooting took place outside during overnight hours when the facility was closed.
Authorities have not yet released information about a suspect or any arrests connected to the case. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence and determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
The Amarillo Police Department emphasized that the case remains active. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and additional details will be shared as they become available.
