A deadly early-morning shooting in downtown Austin on Sunday has left at least three people dead — including the suspected gunman — and 14 others injured, according to authorities. Investigators are now examining whether the attack may have ties to terrorism.
Police say the shooting unfolded just before 2 a.m. at Buford's, a popular beer garden in the city’s nightlife district.
What Happened
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said a large SUV was seen circling the block multiple times before the violence began. The suspected shooter allegedly rolled down the windows and began firing a pistol into the crowd gathered at the bar, striking patrons.
After parking and exiting the vehicle, the suspect reportedly switched to a rifle and continued shooting.
Officers and paramedics were already stationed nearby along East Sixth Street — one of Austin’s busiest entertainment areas — and responded within a minute of the first emergency call.
Police ultimately shot and killed the suspected gunman at the scene, Davis confirmed.
Fourteen victims were transported to local hospitals, according to Austin-Travis County EMS Chief Robert Luckritz. Three were reported to be in critical condition.
Possible Terrorism Link Under Investigation
Federal authorities are now involved as investigators work to determine a motive.
Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI San Antonio office, said there are “indicators” suggesting a possible terrorism connection.
“In terms of specifically what type of terrorism, we're just at this point prepared to say that it was potentially an act of terrorism,” Doran said during a news conference.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, along with additional specialty teams, has joined the investigation.
Authorities have not yet released details about what those indicators might be, and officials emphasized that the investigation remains in its early stages.
Community Impact
Austin Mayor Kirk Watson described the shooting as a traumatic moment for the city.
The attack, he said, has “brought significant trauma” to the community.
Watson also credited first responders with preventing further loss of life.
“There is no question in my mind that the quick response of the police officers and of our EMS personnel and most professionals made a difference and saved lives,” he said.
Political Leaders Respond
The shooting quickly drew reactions from elected officials.
U.S. Rep. Chip Roy called details of the incident “concerning” in a post on X and offered prayers for the victims and their families.
Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. Greg Casar said he was “horrified and heartbroken” by the violence.
“We must end America’s gun violence epidemic,” Casar wrote. “Americans should be able to have fun at a bar without it turning into an unspeakable nightmare like this one— and I will redouble my efforts in Congress to prevent the next tragedy like this.”
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the suspected gunman or the deceased victims. Officials also have not confirmed whether the attacker acted alone.
Law enforcement continues to gather evidence, review surveillance footage, and interview witnesses as they work to piece together the sequence of events and determine a motive.
