For three quarters on Friday night, the postseason dream was still alive for the Lady Rebels of Tascosa High School.
Facing defending state champion Denton Ryan High School in the Class 5A Division I regional final, Tascosa showed the kind of resilience that had defined its season. Despite never holding a lead, the Lady Rebels stayed within striking distance deep into the second half, giving every indication that a historic comeback was within reach.
Instead, the fourth quarter told a different story.
Tascosa’s remarkable season came to an end with a 54-34 loss, marking a second straight playoff exit at the hands of the Lady Raiders. While the final margin appeared decisive, the flow of the game suggested something far more competitive. Entering the final period trailing by just four, the Lady Rebels were very much in contention.
The challenge all night had been dealing with Ryan’s tempo, athleticism, and size. Early on, the Lady Raiders jumped to a commanding 15-3 lead, threatening to turn the game into a runaway before it ever found rhythm. Tascosa responded with composure, gradually chipping away at the deficit behind improved defensive effort and timely scoring.
By halftime, the gap had narrowed to six. The Lady Rebels continued pressing in the third quarter, trimming the deficit to four on multiple occasions and closing the period down just 34-30. Momentum appeared to be tilting.
Then came the decisive stretch.
Ryan opened the fourth quarter with a surge that quickly shifted control. A three-point play sparked a 10-point run that stretched the lead and forced Tascosa into a difficult offensive rhythm. The Lady Rebels struggled to generate clean looks against Ryan’s interior presence and defensive rotations.
Tascosa managed only two baskets in the final frame, both from Devaeh Johnson, who finished with 14 points to lead the team. No other Lady Rebel scored more than six, underscoring the offensive challenges that surfaced at the worst possible moment.
Ryan’s physical advantages played a major role. With size protecting the rim and length disrupting passing lanes, Tascosa was forced into contested attempts and could not sustain the ball movement that had fueled earlier success. The Lady Raiders’ defensive discipline ultimately wore down a determined opponent.
Even so, the fact that the game remained competitive heading into the final quarter spoke volumes about Tascosa’s grit. After the early deficit, the Lady Rebels refused to fade, consistently battling back and forcing the defending champions to earn every inch of separation.
The season itself marked a significant achievement.
Under first-year leadership, Tascosa adapted quickly to a new system while maintaining the competitive standard established in recent years. Finishing with a 32-4 record and returning to the regional final represented one of the program’s strongest runs in decades.
While the ending mirrored last season’s outcome, the journey reinforced the foundation of toughness and persistence that defined this group. The Lady Rebels proved capable of contending deep into the postseason, and their fight against one of the state’s elite teams highlighted both how far they have come and how close they may be to taking the next step.
