A 15-year-old girl died early New Year’s Day after being shot while inside a vehicle on the city’s west side, according to Amarillo Police Department officials.
Officers were dispatched to the 6000 block of Westwind at approximately 1:10 a.m. on January 1, 2026, after receiving a report of a woman who had been shot. When police arrived, they learned the victim had already been transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Despite emergency medical treatment, the teenager succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Her name has not been released.
The Amarillo Police Department Homicide Unit responded and assumed control of the investigation. Detectives spent several hours processing the scene, gathering evidence, and interviewing individuals connected to the incident.
Later in the day, homicide investigators announced two arrests related to the shooting. Jeremiah Luke Matthews, 17, was arrested on a charge of manslaughter. Another 17-year-old, identified as Korde Matthews, was arrested on a charge of tampering with evidence.
Both juveniles were booked into the Potter County Jail on Thursday afternoon. Limited information has been released regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting and the relationship between those involved.
