Gray County deputy arrested, charged with stalking

A Gray County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been arrested and terminated from his position after state authorities investigated allegations of criminal misconduct.

According to Gray County Sheriff Joel Skinner, the Sheriff’s Office was notified on the evening of Dec. 4, 2025, about alleged misconduct involving Deputy Martin Castaneda. To ensure what officials described as a thorough and impartial investigation, Sheriff Skinner requested that the Texas Rangers take over the case soon after receiving the report.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) stated that Castaneda, 31, was arrested on Dec. 5 and charged with stalking. He was booked into the Hemphill County Jail and is currently being held with no bond. Following his arrest, the Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Castaneda was terminated from employment the same day.

In its public statement, the Gray County Sheriff’s Office said:

“The Gray County Sheriff’s Office is committed to maintaining the highest professional standards, ethical standards, transparency, and accountability. The investigation is ongoing, and no further information will be released at this time to protect the integrity of the process.”

DPS also reported that no additional information is available at this stage.

Officials have not released details regarding the alleged stalking incident, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. The Texas Rangers are continuing to handle the case.
