The Canyon City Commission has approved the purchase of a new fire truck costing more than $1 million for the city’s fire department, citing the need to replace aging equipment.
The approval came during the commission’s most recent meeting. Officials noted that the department’s current fire engine, which serves as its primary response vehicle, has reached the end of its useful life.
The purchase is part of a broader $14 million public safety bond approved by Canyon voters in May. The bond, which includes funding for renovations and expansion of the city’s public safety facilities, allocates $1 million specifically for the new fire engine. More than 60% of the bond is designated for improvements to the fire department.
City officials say the bond will help ensure emergency services can meet the needs of a growing community.
“It’s a chance for us to step forward and step out, and our citizens because of their vote in May they gave us an opportunity to shine and also provide them with the services they deserve and that they want,” said Jon Behrens, Canyon’s assistant city manager.
The city plans to sell the current rescue truck, and proceeds from the sale could be used to offset any additional costs not covered by the voter-approved bond.
The Canyon Fire Department has recently transitioned to a 24-hour staffing model, reflecting the city’s commitment to maintaining high service standards.
“The city of Canyon is in the 90th percentile in the state of Texas. There’s only 10% of cities that are larger in Texas than us, and so we need to offer those types of services and we need to look and we need to be like people and cities in those percentiles,” Behrens said.
