Bomb threat at Canyon Walmart leads to arrest of local woman

The Canyon Police Department (CPD) responded to a reported bomb threat at the Canyon Walmart, located at 1701 N 23rd Street, on Friday evening, October 17, 2025. The call came in around 5:20 p.m. after a store employee discovered a written note suggesting a bomb threat and promptly notified authorities.

Upon arrival, CPD officers coordinated closely with Walmart management to assess the credibility of the threat. After evaluating the circumstances, officials determined that an immediate evacuation was not necessary. Officers and store staff conducted a careful walkthrough of the entire premises to ensure the safety of customers and employees.

During the investigation, officers also reviewed security footage from the store. The video evidence, along with additional information gathered at the scene, led investigators to identify a suspect — 21-year-old Canyon resident Melena LaFuente.

Following further investigation, CPD officers located LaFuente later that evening. She was taken into custody and booked into the Randall County Sheriff’s Office Jail. LaFuente faces a charge of False Alarm or Report, a Class A misdemeanor under Texas law.

Authorities confirmed that no explosive device was found and that the threat was determined to be false. CPD credited both the quick action of Walmart employees and the coordinated response of law enforcement for ensuring public safety throughout the incident.
