Canyon ISD responds to assault incident at junior high football game

Canyon Independent School District (CISD) officials are addressing an assault incident that occurred during a junior high football game Tuesday night at West Plains High School.

According to a statement from the district, the person involved was a part-time assistant who had been hired to help with athletic events, not a full-time coach or teacher. CISD said the individual’s behavior “does not align with Canyon ISD’s expectations for professionalism and behavior during a district event.”

The district confirmed that the person is no longer employed, adding that the position was at-will and part-time. The statement emphasized that maintaining a safe and respectful environment during school activities is a top priority.

The Amarillo Police Department confirmed that a report related to the incident was filed but said no arrests had been made at the time of the report. Police did not release the name of the individual involved, citing the ongoing investigation.

District officials stated that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement as the investigation continues. CISD has not provided additional details about the nature of the altercation or who was involved, citing the active status of the police report.

The incident took place during what was otherwise a routine junior high football game, an event that typically draws students, families, and community members. No injuries or disruptions to the game have been publicly reported.

CISD’s response underscores the district’s commitment to professionalism among staff, including part-time and event-based employees. Officials said they are reviewing event staffing procedures to ensure that all personnel represent the district’s standards of conduct.

The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates are expected as Amarillo police continue to gather information.
