Residents of the North Heights neighborhood can expect construction activity to begin this week as the City of Amarillo launches a $1.28 million project to replace and upgrade aging water mains. The North Heights Water Main Replacement Project (NHWMRP) is designed to improve water service reliability and capacity in the area.
The project, which was unanimously approved by the Amarillo City Council in June, is fully funded through revenues from the City of Amarillo (COA) water and sewer funds. Turkey Creek HDD, the contracted construction firm, will begin the mobilization process this week in the alleyway between the 1200 block of North Polk Street and Taylor Street. The construction will then proceed south toward the 800 block of North Polk and Taylor streets.
According to city planning documents, the NHWMRP will replace existing two-inch water mains with new six-inch pipes in select locations throughout North Heights. This upgrade is expected to enhance water flow and overall service for local residents, addressing both current demands and anticipated future needs.
Most of the construction work will take place in alleys, with some street crossings required. To accommodate the project, the City of Amarillo’s Solid Waste Department will temporarily relocate dumpsters in affected alleys. Residents are encouraged to watch for notices and updates regarding temporary changes to trash pickup locations during construction.
While city officials and the contractor aim to minimize disruptions, residents and motorists should anticipate some traffic impacts near the construction areas. Traffic control measures, including signs and temporary lane adjustments, will be in place to ensure public safety. Motorists are urged to follow posted signage and drive with caution in the work zones.
City staff emphasized that the project is an important step in maintaining and modernizing Amarillo’s water infrastructure. “Replacing outdated water mains is essential to providing reliable water service to the North Heights community,” city documents note. The larger six-inch mains will allow for increased water pressure and capacity, supporting both daily household use and emergency needs such as fire protection.
The NHWMRP represents a proactive investment in the city’s utility infrastructure, reflecting ongoing efforts to maintain Amarillo’s water and sewer systems. Residents may notice construction equipment, work crews, and temporary disruptions in alleys and streets as the project progresses over the coming months.
