Shooting on Janet Dr. leaves one person dead, another in custody


A homicide investigation is underway following a fatal shooting that occurred Tuesday morning in a residential neighborhood in Amarillo.

At approximately 8:20 a.m. on July 8, 2025, Amarillo Police officers were dispatched to the 3400 block of Janet Drive in response to reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, identified as 54-year-old Christopher Scott Copeland, who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.

Emergency personnel from Amarillo Medical Services (AMS) and the Amarillo Fire Department (AFD) arrived promptly and attempted life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, Copeland was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The suspected shooter was taken into custody without incident and is currently being held for questioning. Police have confirmed that the shooting appears to be an isolated incident, and there is no immediate threat to the community.

The Amarillo Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet released details regarding a possible motive or the identity of the suspect.
