Traffic shift begins Thursday as Georgia Street reconstruction moves forward

Drivers traveling through southwest Amarillo should prepare for a shift in traffic patterns starting Thursday, as the Georgia Street Reconstruction Project continues its first phase.

Beginning Thursday morning, the northbound lane of Georgia Street at South Loop 335 will be closed to traffic. A detour will redirect drivers to Western Street and Farmers Avenue to navigate around the construction zone.

The closure is expected to last for about two weeks, though that timeline could change depending on weather conditions.

This work is part of the project’s initial phase, which involves relocating utilities before full street reconstruction begins. The entire Georgia Street project is scheduled for completion in November 2028.

City officials say the detour is designed to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently, while reducing disruptions for nearby residents and businesses. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for their commute and to pay close attention to posted signs and detour routes.

More updates will be provided as the project progresses.
