City of Canyon puts scam roofers on notice in wake of severe weather

In the aftermath of recent severe storms that caused damage across the city, Canyon officials are stepping up efforts to protect residents from fraudulent or unlicensed contractors, particularly those offering roofing repairs door to door.

With damaged roofs and downed structures drawing the attention of roofing companies from across the region, many of these contractors have begun canvassing neighborhoods in search of business. However, city leaders warn that not all of these companies are operating legally — and some may be looking to take advantage of unsuspecting residents.

To prevent such scams and reduce unwanted contact, the City of Canyon is reminding residents that all soliciting businesses are required to carry a certified permit issued by the city.

“If somebody comes door to door, especially in the city of Canyon, you can ask them to show you their permit from the City of Canyon,” said Lucas Raley, the city’s Director of Planning and Development. “They should have it displayed, and a lot of them keep it in their pocket, but if they do not have that permit, they are not authorized to go door to door within the city.”

Raley also emphasized that homeowners have the right to protect their privacy. If a resident has a “No Soliciting” sign displayed and a company still knocks, it may be a red flag that the contractor is not operating with proper authorization.

“People are calling us and saying, ‘Hey, somebody stopped by, they were not registered, they were not permitted, they are still bothering us.’ We will then escalate that to our police department,” Raley explained. “We do issue citations for anybody going door to door that does not have a permit to do so.”

What Residents Can Do:

Ask for the city-issued solicitation permit if someone comes to your door offering repair services.

Do not engage with anyone who refuses or cannot show a valid permit.

Report violations by calling the City of Canyon at 806-655-5000, option 6.

If you have a No Soliciting sign and someone still approaches your home, consider it a potential violation and notify authorities.

The city encourages all residents to stay vigilant and verify contractor credentials before agreeing to any repair work or signing contracts, especially in the wake of natural disasters when scammers often strike.
